Another international weightlifting competition checked off by SFTF!
The International Women Weightlifting Grand Prix is a high standard competition organised by Konrad Hogg every year. This year was the 15th competition held in Tenerife on the 11th and 12th of May. Master lifter Nicky Yudin and senior lifter Vindhya Gobin were given the opportunity to participate and gain more experience competing on an international level which proved to be beneficial for both lifters. The lifters were accompanied by head coach Kazem Panjavi. The competition venue Centro Regional de Halterofilia had an amazing set up and it was evident how much work had gone into organising the competition. Everyone involved in running the competition did a fantastic job.
Both lifters performed well in their international stage and received a lot of support from the crowd during their lifts. Nicky Yudin completed all 6 lifts successfully achieving a personal best in the snatch at 37kg and finishing on a 48kg power clean and jerk. Vindhya Gobin finished with a 48kg snatch and had the opportunity to test out her squat jerk, successfully lifting 58kg and narrowly missing her 62kg attempt. As well as gaining competition experience, it was a good opportunity to observe how other lifters on different levels and from different teams prepare and compete. There were certainly some big weights being shifted on the platform which was amazing to see.In the evening of the 12th, the team were able to wind down at the awards ceremony with all the competitors which was held at the Maritim hotel, the accommodation for the participants which also had great training facilities. During the evening, head coach Kazem Panjavi dished out the awards, one of which was a trophy awarded to Nicky Yudin for finishing 1st place in her age group and 3rd place overall in the masters category. The trip was definitely a good learning curve for the team and a good opportunity for them to network with other teams and take home some tips in the lead up to preparing for the Phoenix cup 2018.We would like to thank Konrad for hosting a fantastic competition and congratulate him on doing a great job. We look forward to bringing more lifters to compete in the future.
