The international Phoenix Cup was held on the 21st of October 2018.
On the 20th of October, the set up for the competition began with lots of club members coming in to help set up as well as other helpers from Salzburg, Birmingham and around London. This included the setting up of the platform, making sure all screens, the scoreboard was calibrated and working and prepping the awards.
Even though it did take a lot of time, it allowed us to make sure that the competition venue was up to high standards and so that the competition could run smoothly. On the day of the competition, we had two weigh in groups for both male and female.
The competition consisted of four groups including Kids, Youth, Junior and Senior for both male and female. The competition consisted of a total of 38 athletes competing for the top position, including two highly ranked German athletes, Max Lang and Tabea Tabel!
The competition had fantastic entertainment between each group including two singers, Kurdish dancers, Kidology and kSPARK Bollywood dancers with Dj Ardi resistance & Donya news Tv/Sky support.
To end the competition, we gave out fantastic awards to the winners including weightlifting gear from our sponsor Eleiko and nice goody bags to everyone who came, supported and lifted.
After the competition, there was a banquet, in which we celebrated and gave out all of the team awards, the top three places going to Département du Nord ( France), Oxford Power (Oxford) and Phoenix (London).
This competition is the only international weightlifting held in England which includes having teams from France and Germany. As the competition ran smoothly and at a high standard, it is clear to say that our fourth Phoenix Cup was a success.
Clun head coach said: It was the best competition I have done in my 30 years coaching currier. It was very successful. I had a dream to replace the famous Silver Dragon international weightlifting competition which stopped in 2002. But seems my competition become an issue for BWL and they didn’t support this competition and also most of London’s clubs ignoring this competition as they didn’t want to lose their connection with BWL.
So……. I have decided it to stop running the only international competition in the UK as politic killed my sports spirit, I am done here.
I need to say a big thanks to Eleiko and Harrow school for all help support in the past 4 years and make this competition grove strong,
